Paris

Paris is a magical city, full of culture and with a special charm which is felt in every corner, every square, and in every one of its cafes. Walking through the heart of the French capital, mixing with the Parisians will make you feel like you are in a film. A large part of the city has been renovated over the last few years, so Paris is now in one of its best moments. The River Seine goes through the centre of the city, dividing the French capital in two, the right bank and left bank. Both parts are full of big museums, churches, monuments, shops, hotels and restaurants.

Paris is, after all, a city which will surprise you every day with something new, and where there is always something to do or see, for as long as you decide to stay.

Useful information:

Public transport in Paris

  • Metro: Is the simplest and quickest way of getting to the capital, and also one of the cheapest. The Parisian metro has nearly 300 stations and 16 lines, numbers 1 to 14, plus 3a and 7a. The metro runs every day, including bank holidays, from 5:30 in the morning to 1:00am. The white ticket is valied for 2 hours provided you don´t get off the metro through one of the exit doors. To get a bus to continue your journey, you will need to buy another ticket.
  • Bus: The bus is better avoided because the general frequency of the buses is not good. At night, there is a night bus serivce in Paris, the Noctanbus, which covers different routes which leave from Chatelet.

Interests about Paris

  • The centre of Paris is divided into 20 districts or administrative districts. The majority of the tourist areas can be found in the first 8 districts. Generally, on the tours of Paris, the number of the district you are in will be pointed out.
  • The nickname "The city of Light" is because Paris was the first city to equip the streets and important buildings with electric lights.
  • In this city, human rights and the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity were set.
  • The Eiffel Tower has more visitors than the Empire State.
  • There is a vampire museum in the neighbourhood of Les Lilas.
  • The Bikini was born in Paris in 1946.

What to see in Paris

  • The Louvre: the jewel of Parisian museums
  • The museum of d´Orsay. Situated opposite the Louvre, has an extense and important collection of modern art.
  • The Eiffel Tower: symbol of Paris, was constructed for the Universal exposition in 1889 and was destroyed in 1890. The Parisians hated it and accused the project of being a cold metal mountain, a black chimney that would overshadow the art of the city.
  • Montmartre can be found in district 18 and is one of the most charming neighbourhoods in the city.
  • The Notre-Dame Cathedral is the most well known church in Paris, and is the work representative of gothic style excellence worldwide.
  • The Pigalle neighbourhood: can be found in the North of Paris; Moulin Rouge is here, and it is one of the liveliest places at night in Paris.
  • The Pompidou centre, designed by architect Renzo Piano is an enormous contemporary art museum.
  • If you want to vist various museums and monuments in a short amount of time, you can buy a museum and monuments pass for a day for 15€, three days for 30€ or five days for 45€. This pass allows visitors to 70 places of interest without having to queue.
  • In many museums and places of interest you can enter for free if you present your European passport and if you are younger than 26.

At night - going out in Paris

  • At night, the city still has its charm and the main buildings and monuments are lit up spectacularly by the illuminations in the city.
  • The night is the perfect time to do many unforgettable things in Paris: a romantic dinner, a cruise on the Seine watching the illuminations of the City of light, attend a unique show such as Moulin Rouge, or just take a stroll through places such as the Latin Quarter or the Champs Elysees.

Charles de Gaulle airport (CDG) is the main airport in Paris and the second in Europe according to the number of passengers. The airport is quite big and has 3 terminals. To get between the terminals there is a free bus line.

  • Roissybus: A bus that connects the airport with the Opera station. The price is 8.90€ and the journey time varies from 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Taxi: the price to get to the centre is 50€. This price increases by 15% from 19:00 and on Sundays and bank holidays.

To get to the centre of Paris from Orly

The second airport in Paris is Orly airport

  • RER C and bus: Orly is connected with the Pont de Rungis station on line C of the RER. The journey time is 35 minutes and it costs 6.10€ (3.60€ on the RER and 2.50€ on the bus). This is the most recommended option.
