The English school in Torquay is a small, independent, family-owned school. 

It was opened in 1996 and has a lively, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Students come from over 30 different countries, especially Switzerland, Korea, UAE, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, Japan and Mexico. This mixture allows you to make new friends from around the world. 

The school is very well located, with views over the harbour and bay. It is just 50m from the main shopping street and the harbour, close to restaurants, beaches and nightlife of the city.  

It moved to a new building in 2012. The location could not be better, with cafes, shops and restaurants just a few steps away. The impressive building is one of the most emblematic in Torquay and is much bigger than the previous one, with a capacity for more than 280 students.

Torquay

Torquay is a popular tourist center. It has a population of 60,000 inhabitants and is the largest city in this area. It offers guests a pleasant climate and lush vegetation. It was originally a fishing village, but gradually became a popular vacation spot.

The microclimate of the city is unique in the region and includes up to tropical vegetation. This favourable location makes it one of the most interesting destinations to learn English. 23% of the population is under 20 years old. Studying English here, you will enjoy a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, life on the beach and water sports. Remember that the school has its own charter and at the same school sailing lessons are given for all levels.

The city has more than 20 beaches and in it there are options for all tastes: some are with sandy soils, red clay rocks or just gravel.

Moving around the city

Torquay town is very small. The best way to visit is to walk. To navigate in the bay you can have many choices of public transportation: trains, boats and buses.

And at night?

Torquay has an unrivaled nightlife. There's something for everyone: world-class restaurants, continental style bars, live music, festivals, fairs, vibrant nightclubs, fireworks and carnivals.

Every evening you can choose from plenty of activities, from theatre performances to a variety of pubs, bars and nightclubs. The offer is varied; there is music of all styles. Most places close at 03:00 am. The center of the nightlife of the city is the port that has a vibrant and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

 

The beaches


Along the 22 miles of the coast of the English Riviera there are over 20 beaches and coves.
Some are white sandy beaches, others are smaller and more isolated. Many of the beaches in this area have received prestigious awards for cleanliness and quality.

Standard course

Looks at the four basic skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar, although special attention is paid to communication. 

The classes are given by experienced and friendly teachers. Free afternoons for private study, sightseeing, activities or sailing. 

In the classes, we mix students from different nationalities to improve the immersion in a cultural environment. Also, at the end of the course the students will get a certificate.

*On the first day there will be a level test which starts at 9:30 so the class will start at 11:30.

Intensive course

This course is made up of standard English classes in the morning (20 lessons) plus Intensive English classes in the afternoon (8 lessons) in reduced groups. 

The maximum number of students per class in the morning is 12 and in the afternoon is 6, so you have more opportunity to speak.

How to get there

How to get to Torquay

Getting to Torquay is very simple: we advise that you fly to either London, Bristol or Exeter

From London airport (Heathrow)

  • If you fly to London Heathrow airport, there is a direct bus every 2 hours (National Express Service NX501)
  • The bus leaves the central LHR station every 2 hours from 08:40 - 23:40. The journey is 4 hours 30 minutes, and the ticket costs £25.

From Exeter airport

  • From Exeter airport, you will have to get a bus to the central train station, St David´s. The bus leaves every hour from 07:30-18:45. The joueny is 30 minutes and it costs £5.
  • From Exeter station, there are trains to Torquay every half an hour, from 05:15-20:45. The journey time is 45 minutes. Ticket price is £7.

From Bristol airport

  • From Bristol airport, you will need to get a bus to the central train station. More information here: http://flyer.bristolairport.co.uk. There is a bus every 15 minutes. The journey time is 25 minutes.
  • From Bristol station, there are regular trains to Torquay. The trains leave every hour from 05:00-19:45. The journey time is 1 hour and a half. 

From London Gatwick airport

  • From London Gatwick there is a direct bus from the bus station at the airport to Torquay. The bus leaves every 2 hours until 21:45. The journey time is 6 hours. (National Express Service FK210). Price £35.

From London Stansted airport

  • From London Stansted airport there are direct buses to Torquay. The journey time is 6 hours 30 minutes. The bus leaves every 2 hours until 23:45. (National Express Service JL727). Price £40.
